Veja abaixo:
was + ing form were + ing form
I was working last night.
(Eu estava trabalhando na noite passada.) It was raining all the afternoon.
(Estava chovendo a tarde toda.)
• ações que aconteceram enquanto alguma outra coisa acontecia
While we were crossing the street yesterday, we heard the explosion. (Enquanto nós atravessávamos a rua ontem, ouvimos a explosão.)
Jane met her husband while she was living in Spain.
While I was studying, my mother was cooking.
(Enquanto eu estava estudando, minha mãe estava cozinhando.)
Affirmative Negative Interrogative
I was sleeping I was not sleeping Was I sleeping? You were sleeping You were not sleeping Were you sleeping? He was sleeping He was not sleeping Was he sleeping? She was sleeping She was not sleeping Was she sleeping? It was sleeping It was not sleeping Was it sleeping?
We were sleeping We were not sleeping Were we sleeping? You were sleeping You were not sleeping Were you sleeping? They were sleeping They were not sleeping Were they sleeping?
É muito comum nas frases negativas usarmos a contração do "to be + not". Veja como fica neste caso:
Was + not = wasn't
Were + not = weren't
